RSF drone strikes in northern Sudan’s Atbara cause casualties
Sudan News reported that RSF forces struck a power substation in Atbara, the capital of River Nile state, causing widespread electricity outages across River Nile and parts of neighboring Red Sea state, citing local sources. Monitoring platforms indicated that the Al-Maqran power station was also targeted with a swarm of drones.
Sudanese air defenses intercepted several unmanned aircraft, but others struck the Atbara facility, igniting a limited fire and triggering extensive power cuts affecting River Nile, Red Sea state, and parts of Omdurman. Two civil defense workers stationed at the Atbara power facility were killed, and several main transformers suffered severe damage.
Eyewitnesses reported that RSF forces launched a large number of so-called suicide drones at Atbara, Al-Damer, and other locations, including Atbara airport. Loud explosions were heard as anti-aircraft fire attempted to repel the drones. According to witnesses, the drones were launched from areas in the Kordofan region, particularly the city of Bara in North Kordofan, which has been under RSF control for over two months.
The three Kordofan states – North, West, and South – have experienced weeks of intense fighting between the army and RSF, forcing tens of thousands to flee. Across Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five Darfur states in the west, except for northern parts of North Darfur under army control. The army maintains control over most areas of the remaining 13 states in the south, north, east, and central regions, including the capital, Khartoum.
The ongoing conflict between Sudan’s army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has killed thousands and displaced millions, according to reports.
